From Magnan, a mud road lead to the river Var. Up to 1860, it had been the border between Nice County, States of Savoy_Piedmont-Sardinia and France. (Historical context).

The river Var is very large with gravel bars. To cross the river, people waded or used wooden bridges often washed away by flash floods. In dry season, it was not deep but else it could be hard to wade across the river. Even with the help of staff from Saint-Laurent-du-Var, it culd be animated.

Tobias George Smollett, one of the first english tourist, describe this Var crossing in 1763 :

« six men, Pants tucked up up to the belt, with long poles in their hands, took care of our car and by one thousand bends, led us safe and sound in the other edge. » Wikipedia, Tobias George Smollett

Since 1845, a new wooden bridge crossed the river. In the middle was the border between France ant Savoy-Piedmont-Sardinia States.

1862 - 1864, parallel to this wooden bridge, closer to the sea, a stone bridge was built and enlarged for the railroad. The old wooden bridge remained still in 1889 but only for pedestrians.
